After honing his strategic toolkit for nearly a decade at international consulting firm Monitor Group and scaling impact at Teach For America as Chief Learning Officer, Jeff co-founded Transcend in 2015—a venture that catalyzes transformation in learning environments through human-centered design and systematic innovation. From 2015-2024, he served as co-CEO of Transcend, where he is now a Board member and leads Transcend Labs.
Jeff leverages his unique blend of consulting rigor and entrepreneurial leadership to drive systemic impact. His doctoral research at Columbia University's Teachers College focused on applying design thinking methodologies to organizational innovation—intellectual groundwork that now shapes Transcend's approach to design.
Jeff's first book, "Ask," distills key insights for leaders on unlocking organizational wisdom through strategic questioning. This methodology reflects his experience building and advising high-growth organizations, including roles on the boards of multiple education technology ventures and charter school networks.
Jeff earned a Bachelors in Psychology from Brown University and a Masters and Doctorate in Adult Learning and Leadership from Columbia University. He is an Aspen Global Leadership Fellow and an Edmund Hillary Fellow.
Why are you passionate about working with startup founders?
As a founder, advisor, and lifelong student of organizational transformation, I'm driven by the unique power of startup leaders to reshape industries and human experiences. Through my journey from strategy consultant at Monitor Group to co-founder of Transcend, I've witnessed firsthand how entrepreneurial leaders catalyze breakthrough innovation while building cultures of extraordinary impact.
My work with startups stems from a deep conviction that these organizations are society's primary engines of meaningful change. Whether revolutionizing education systems or pioneering new business models, startup leaders consistently demonstrate the courage to challenge established paradigms while nurturing teams that blend execution excellence with exploratory thinking.
The insights captured in my book "Ask" emerged directly from observing how exceptional founders leverage collective intelligence to drive innovation. As both a practitioner and advisor, I've seen how the most effective startup leaders create environments where curiosity flourishes, enabling their organizations to solve complex challenges with novel approaches.
My passion for supporting founders is fundamentally about accelerating positive change. By helping startup leaders build more resilient, adaptive, and purpose-driven organizations, we multiply their capacity to create lasting impact for customers, employees, and society at large.
What experience do you have working with startup founders?
My experience with startup founders spans both practitioner and advisory roles across the entrepreneurial lifecycle. As co-founder of Transcend, I've navigated the full spectrum of startup challenges—from initial concept validation and fundraising to scaling operations and building high-performing teams. This firsthand experience has given me deep insight into the unique pressures and strategic decisions founders face daily.
My board service with education technology ventures like New Classrooms Innovation Partners and Edthena has provided extensive exposure to critical startup inflection points, including fundraising rounds, market positioning shifts, and organizational scaling challenges. Through these roles, I've advised founders on strategic priorities ranging from product-market fit to go-to-market strategy and board development.
Additionally, my work with early-stage education organizations like Leadership Prep Charter Schools and the National Academy for Advanced Teacher Education has honed my expertise in startup governance, talent development, and organizational design. This portfolio of experience encompasses crucial founder challenges including pitch refinement, investor relations, team building, and conflict resolution.
Drawing from my strategy consulting background at Monitor Group, I bring structured frameworks and analytical rigor to startup leadership challenges while maintaining the agility required in high-growth environments. This combination of founder experience and advisory expertise enables me to provide practical, actionable guidance to entrepreneurial leaders navigating complex strategic decisions.
