Michael Durie

Michael Durie (Ngati Maniapoto, Ngati Kahungunu) is a lifelong and passionate marketer with more than 45 years of advertising, PR, sales and marketing management experience having worked across a broad range of corporate, and small-medium business enterprises in Australia and New Zealand.
Working under his consulting practice Durie Hill + Associates, he mentors and advises organisations on how to grow, through data-driven insights and strategy using creative tactics to find, get, keep and grow their customer base profitably.
Michael is the Southern chair of the Marketing Association (NZ), a former chair of KEA NZ based in NSW, a national board member of Business Mentors NZ and an advisory board member of various tech and business start-ups. He has taught digital marketing and business sales at the University of Canterbury and Ara and is a ThincLab advisor. In 2020 he co-founded Christchurch-based clean energy-tech firm, HIKO Unlimited and is also co-owner with his wife of leading floral and gift retailer, Court Florist.
Why are you passionate about working with startup founders?
Combining my experience as both a practising business owner and professional marketer, I have much to offer the next generation of entrepreneurial success stories emerging from Otautahi Christchurch. I've been a mentor via BMNZ for almost 25 years, and more lately coached and advised startups emerging from UCE. I've assisted many business owners during that time to thrive and survive and I look forward to continuing my passion for growing start-up successes via the MoA community.
What experience do you have working with startup founders?
Since 2016 I've mentored students and teams via the University of Canterbury Summer Start-Up School, presented marketing workshops via ThincLab and the MA and assisted founders via MoA incubator programmes. I have also assisted, advised, coached and mentored local start-up successes over the past 8 years including Vxt, Korure, Funded, Narixfsd, Komodo, EverYellow, and many more.
