EVENT RECAP: Coffee and Jam #192

Speakers:

Janet Nicol

Janet is a Pascha Therapist, a teacher and a leader. Through her work with UC Centre for Entrepreneurship she has realized her vision to help teach and to spread the awareness of the importance of developing emotionally aware children.

Janet shared with us the drive behind her vision for children and their emotions in Aotearoa. New Zealand has the highest teen suicide rate in the developed world – OECD report 2016. Janet wants to teach children to feel that its ok to express their emotions openly, when children are given the permission to feel, generally they feel better in themselves. But it’s not just children that need to be taught this, as Janet mentioned; it takes a village to raise a child. Parents and teachers are key influences in a child’s upbringing and it’s important to provide them with the same values to then project them onto their children/students.

Janet runs Shining Stars emotional workshops for teachers and feeling expression workshops for children. Emotional workshops are valuable to teachers as there are great benefits in the classroom:

  • Increased positive social behaviour
  • Less emotional distress
  • Reduced behavioural issues
  • Improved academic performance

Erica Austin

Our Events Awesomist, Erica, ran a social networking workshop for the second half of Coffee + Jam to show everyone what the sessions are all about and how they can get involved when attending. Coffee + Jam sessions are essentially for people to come along to get inspired, meet new people and make new connections.

The workshop

*Be prepared to share your passions, activate your ideas and make valuable connections*

  1. Find someone new to meet and share with them what you’re into and and idea you have for 2017.
  2. Introduce your partner to someone else (their name, passion and idea)
  3. Share one useful connection à to connect people who may be able to help each other out with their ideas.

Coffee & Jam is Christchurch's longest running weekly meet up for entrepreneurially minded people. It’s a great place to see ordinary people doing extraordinary things, meet people, learn and share in a creative space, hear about other events in Christchurch and indulge in a little bit of free coffee, jam and bread.

If you have an idea you'd like to pitch get in touch with Gina at gina@ministryofawesome.com.
