Lightening the Mental Load for Parents
When COVID-19 forced Nicole Retter to juggle work, childcare, and family life from home, the mental load became unbearable.
Nicole Retter "When COVID hit, everything came to a head. I was trying to balance work, kids, and caring for my injured husband, all while managing the endless list of family to-dos. There were project management tools for businesses, but nothing to address the unique mental load of running a household. I thought, ‘This is crazy!’ I was determined to find a solution."
A Lightbulb Moment: Turning Frustration into Innovation
Conversations with other parents confirmed that family coordination was a universal challenge. From school events to medical appointments, the mental load was relentless. That’s when the idea for PAM was born.
"At school drop-offs and pick-ups, I kept hearing the same thing—everyone was stressed about managing the family calendar. We’d say, ‘If I forget one thing, the whole day goes to chaos.’ That’s when I knew—there had to be a better way."

From Prototype to Product
Nicole started small. Her first prototype wasn’t a high-tech solution—it was a friend manually organising family schedules in a spreadsheet, mimicking what PAM would eventually automate.
"At first, I paid a friend to pretend to be the AI! Families would email their requests, and she’d organise everything. It was a start, but it wasn’t scalable. We refined the idea, built a tech prototype, and tested it with real families."
After months of iteration, PAM launched in app stores, ready to simplify family life.

AI at the Heart of PAM
PAM evolved into an AI-driven assistant that automatically organises family schedules. It processes information from email, school newsletters, WhatsApp group chats, screenshots, photos of invitations, what’s in your head, and appointment reminders—seamlessly integrating key details into a single, easy-to-manage system.
"AI has transformed PAM. It doesn’t just act as a shared calendar—it actively reduces the mental load by reading through school newsletters, picking up key dates, and even pulling reminders from messages. It’s a game-changer for parents."
Privacy First: A Non-Negotiable Promise
With data privacy a growing concern, Nicole prioritised security from the start. Unlike many competitors, PAM guarantees that user data remains protected and never sold.
"Privacy is a top priority. We made a non-negotiable rule: we will never sell user data. Parents need to know their information is safe with us. That’s why we offer a free version of PAM, with a premium tier for those who need additional features."
Navigating the Startup Rollercoaster
Starting a tech company was a huge leap for Nicole, who had previously run a marketing consultancy. The startup world was unfamiliar, and every day brought new challenges. But support from the startup ecosystem made all the difference.
"Building PAM was like jumping into a whirlwind. I had to learn everything from scratch—payroll, legal processes, hiring, tech stacks, you name it. But the guidance I received from mentors helped me stay focused and avoid common pitfalls."

Finding Strength in the Startup Community
Nicole’s journey wasn’t a solo effort—she leaned heavily on the resources and networks available to entrepreneurs. The Ministry of Awesome, startup mentors, and founder networks provided invaluable guidance as she navigated the complexities of launching a tech product.
"The startup ecosystem is everything. I couldn’t have done this without the mentors who shared their experiences and pointed me in the right direction. Being part of founder support programmes and networks made all the difference. It’s a community where people truly understand what you’re going through and offer real, practical advice."
"In particular, I received amazing support and built a close connection with Christina Baldarelli and Brent Spicer—they have become trusted advisors."
Empowering Parents: A Lasting Impact
Nicole’s vision for PAM extends beyond convenience—it’s about giving families time back. She hopes that by reducing the mental load, PAM will help parents have more time for fun in their lives (be that with family, or a solo adventure).
"I want PAM to work seamlessly in the background, taking care of the details so parents can focus on what truly matters. We’re just scratching the surface of what PAM can do, and I’m excited for what’s next."
With innovation, privacy, and user needs at its core, PAM is poised to become an essential tool for families worldwide—helping them reduce stress, reclaim time, and enjoy more moments of joy.

Looking Ahead: The Future of PAM
With a growing user base and a dedicated team, Nicole is excited about PAM’s next phase—refining the ‘Brain Dump’ feature, which allows parents to quickly dictate or type tasks, with PAM organising them automatically.
"Our goal is for PAM to be the calendar you never have to check. We want it to anticipate parents’ needs before they even realise them. The ‘Brain Dump’ feature is key to that vision."
