Ali Kennard, founder of Pinpoint Earth, was a key participant in our Summer Founder Catalyst cohort. We caught up with him to discuss the strides he's made during the programme and how it's helped shape the future of his startup.
Tell me about your startup, what inspired you to start this journey, and what significant problem are you solving?
Our startup manufactures solar-powered tracking devices that can track anything, anywhere in the world. However, we focus on the fishing industry, providing governments and regulators with visibility over what's happening in their waters. We were inspired to start this journey due to the drastic changes in fish stocks worldwide and the impact this has on a vital protein source for much of the population.
By increasing visibility, we aim to contribute to sustainable seafood practices, ensuring future generations can continue to rely on this important resource. ![]()
What drew you to join Founder Catalyst, and what specific objective did you have in mind when you started?
I was drawn to Founder Catalyst because my background is in sales and business development, not necessarily in being a CEO or running a company. I wanted to grow personally and learn how to use the tools that Founder Catalyst offers. The objective, from the start, was personal growth—specifically to develop my skills as a CEO.

What progress you've made towards your initial objectives since joining Founder Catalyst? Are there any milestones you can share?
I've definitely grown as a CEO—I'm more confident and have a stronger belief in my abilities. The lessons I've learned through Founder Catalyst have significantly expanded my skills. Beyond personal growth, our company has also advanced thanks to the mentorship and guidance we've received, which have influenced the practices we’ve implemented.
One key milestone is the shift in our design process. Initially, we were caught up in endless discussions and updates. However, after attending one of the mentor trainings, we completely overhauled our approach. Now, we break down development into clear phases with almost a written contract for each stage. This has made us much more productive and has transformed how we operate within the company.
How has Founder Catalyst transformed you personally as a founder? How has it influenced your confidence and skill set?
Founder Catalyst has definitely transformed me as a founder. I'm much more confident now and have a stronger belief in myself, with far less imposter syndrome than when I started. One of the key skills I've gained is learning to let go and trust others, especially through working with Zach and the team in our think tanks and problem-solving sessions.
I've also struggled with finding balance, but the tools they provided to help me create that balance have been incredibly useful. Now, I can step away from the office and return more focused and driven.
These skills are something I’ll carry with me throughout the rest of my career. ![]()

During Founder Catalyst, who has been the most influential person you've met, and how have they impacted your path?
It’s hard to pick just one person because everyone has been fantastic. Zach and Jeffrey have been incredible with their expertise and passion. However, two mentors stand out: Ben Pfeil, who completely transformed our design approach, and Angela Waddell, who has been amazing in helping me connect with contacts, reflect on my progress, and stay on track with my goals. They’ve both been incredibly influential in my journey.
Looking ahead, what are your next steps and future goals for your startup? What vision are you working towards now?
Our next steps involve moving from the design phase to globalisation and commercialisation. With our new products set for release at the end of the month, we’ll focus on building our sales team, expanding globally, and finding key partners to deliver our product worldwide.
I highly recommend the Founder Catalyst program. The skills, passion, and dedication from everyone involved will definitely make you and your company stronger.
